In our lens kit
5th Mar 2020
I've carried a lens kit in my handbag for 11 years now - boy has time flown! Since Dane has his cataract surgery at age 7 months and got his contact lens, these are the bits and bobs that I can't leave home without (or if I accidentally do, I'm a nervous wreck).
Dane wears a Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lens, which is a hard contact lens made of plastic. I've worn soft contact lenses myself before (with great difficulty) so I actually find the hard contact lens a lot easier to deal with. However, for us, it does mean having to carry a few things around with us all the time.
The taker-outerer we use to take his lens out. It kind of suctions onto the surface of the lens so we can easily pull it out.
The put-inerer is used to put the lens back in. I think the technical name is plunger. The lens sort of sticks to it using air suction and then I let go of the air to drop it into his eye.
The rewetting drops are our lifesaver. Sand, wind, dirt, glitter - all these things are a nightmare for contact lens wearers. These drops help lubricate the eye and flush out nasties. If I don't have these on me when we're out and about I get VERY panicky!
The case is obviously where we store the lens when it's being cleaned (once a week). Also handy for storing the lens if it falls out at soccer practice etc.
When Dane was little, there were usually some patchesand some Minims (anaesthetic drops) in there as well.
Always have to be prepared
As a mum with a kid that has a contact lens, I always have to be prepared. I'm sure there will come a time when Dane can manage all this by himself - but for the moment he's pretty content to let me do it all!
